How do you backtest an options strategy for free?

An option chain backtest replays the option chain of a past trading session so you can see open interest, OI change, PCR and support and resistance as they stood at each minute, and check how a setup would have played out before using it with real money.

Why backtest with option chain data and not just price?

Price-only backtests ignore what option writers were doing. If your setup is "buy calls when the highest put OI strike holds", you need the chain at the moment of entry to test it. Replaying the chain shows whether support from OI held, when it shifted, and how PCR moved before a breakout or reversal.

How do you backtest an options strategy for free?

Write the rule down before you start, in a form you cannot bend: the entry condition, the strike you would buy or sell, the stop and the exit. Then replay past sessions one by one, record each trade in a sheet, and only total the results at the end. The AOC Back Tester is free for past sessions after login, and the Strategy Simulator lets you replay a multi-leg strategy's payoff over a past session.

Thirty sessions is a sensible minimum. Include expiry days and trend days, not just the calm ones you remember.

How does the AOC Back Tester work?

Pick a symbol, expiry, date and time, and AOC loads the option chain as it was at that moment. Step forward by 5 seconds up to 1 day, or press play, and see the same highlights, PCR and support and resistance lines as the live chain. The address bar keeps the exact moment, so you can save or share it.

It covers NSE index options such as NIFTY and BANKNIFTY, BSE SENSEX, F&O stocks, and MCX CRUDEOIL and NATURALGAS.

What should you test first?

Three simple questions make good first tests. Does NIFTY respect the highest put OI strike as support on expiry day? What happens in the next hour after resistance shifts lower? Do PCR readings above 1.3 or below 0.7 mark turning points? Each can be checked in an evening.

What are the limits of a backtest?

A replay knows the future, and so do you. Be strict about only using what was on screen at that minute. Slippage and charges are real, especially on far OTM options, so subtract them. And a rule that worked in a low-volatility month may fail when VIX doubles.
